Sarah Mazza, BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles

During our graduate season, here on the LCF blog we are showcasing some of our newly graduated designers. Today we present an interview with Sarah MazzaBA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Surface Textiles whose designs appeared on the catwalk on the 1st of July.

LCF asked: What has been the best part of studying at LCF?

Sarah Mazza: Knitting! I love it; it’s like a drug! When I knit, it’s just such a high. LCF has really helped me learn how to create garments, making me think about shapes and also how and where to use the textile in the actual garments.

LCF: What work experience have you been involved in whilst on your course?

SM: I did a placement at Greg Lawrence and this is where I properly learnt how to shape garments and really knit. Your tutors teach you this at university, but I didn’t really get it until I had to do it in industry, doing all the hand knitting for his shows. Like any placement, it was stressful and time-consuming, but I think it really helped me develop the way that I create my knits; I have been really inspired by his shapes and I loved that he doesn’t use wool either!

LCF: What would you say makes you stand out from the crowd?

SM: I’m a knitwear student but I hate wool – I can’t stand it, I’m actually allergic to it. So I use viscose, cotton, silk and invisible threads and that’s all I really like to use.

LCF: What are you influenced by?

SM: Mark Fast because he creates such elegant knits and I love the way his designs drape over the body. In my first year I started using hair, this is when I started experimenting with different materials. Now I am just into viscose, but I hand-dye everything, then hand knit it and hand stitch it too, it’s quite crafty.

LCF: When designing, what is important to you?

SM: Calculation, maths! You can’t not understand calculations if you want to correctly shape a garment, unless you’re doing cut and sew which is pretty easy. With the materials I use I can’t do that because it would just break after one wear. It’s far more complicated than most people realise.

LCF: What are your plans for the future?

SM: I’m just focusing on my press show garments right now, but hopefully I’ll be able to get myself a job soon. I’d like to work for a few years and then one day start my own business, but I am only young still and I’d like to have more experience in the actual market before then.

LCF: Do you have any advice for future students?

SM: They did warn us before that it was going to be time-consuming, so just get your head down and start knitting and also try to enter as many competitions as possible because this really helps in the future.
