During our graduate season, here on the LCF blog we are showcasing some of the newly graduated designers. Today we present an interview with Shabnam Eslambolchi from BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear whose designs appeared on the catwalk on the 1st of July.

LCF asked: What was the best thing about studying at LCF?

Shabnam Eslambolchi: Being in a very inspiring environment and meeting extremely creative people has been my favourite part of studying here at LCF.  The staff and tutors, as well as fellow students, are just so creative that it’s just impossible not to be creative yourself and I think that’s really important for designers.

LCF: What would you say makes you stand out from the crowd?

SE: I come up with ideas that are quite different since I look at things in a slightly different way and have a different attitude towards things. I’m a careful observer and have an analytical mind. I previously studied engineering and that helps me a lot with my work. It’s a massive influence on my designs and it has provided me with a more analytical way of thinking and observing, as well as encouraging me to pay attention to detail.

LCF: What influences your design aesthetic?

SE: I’ve always been very fond of Hussain Chalayan and I was actually fortunate enough to work with him for 7 or 8 months. He is just amazing as a designer and as a person. I think we both share a similar way of thinking and the fact that we have similar interests and hobbies means that we probably have similar influences.

LCF: Have you had any industry experience during your time on the course?

SE: I contacted Hussain Chalayan in order to try and get some work experience and when I was offered a placement as a design assistant only a couple of days after getting in touch, I jumped at the chance. I’ve also worked with other designers as well, including Erdem and Victor & Rolf. Getting that insight into the way these designers think and the way they deal with problems is really invaluable.

LCF: What does the future hold next?

SE: I am considering doing an MA and potentially working with a few more designers for another year or two, with a view to eventually starting up my own label.

LCF: Do you have any advice for design students?

SE: Stay focused on your vision, but meanwhile also be open to new ideas. At first I was quite unwilling to consider others ideas, but I learnt that this isn’t the best way to be and so I started to listen. Most importantly though, you must believe in your own ideas.
