During our graduate season, here on the LCF blog we are showcasing some of the newly graduated designers. Today we present an interview with Katherine Taylor, BA (Hons) Fashion Jewellery, whose designs will be appearing on the catwalk on the 1st of July.

LCF: What’s the best thing about studying at LCF?
Katherine Taylor: The variety. For myself, my work has changed a lot and I’ve gone in a direction I never would have predicted. I love living in London and I’ve come across loads of smaller museums that I’d probably never have heard of otherwise.

LCF: How do you make sure to stand out from crowd as a designer?
KT: I’ll always throw myself in and try something new. I’ve been looking at lots of traditional crafts and then producing designs in wood that wouldn’t work without the aid of digital manufacturing. Combining craft and digital work is my way to stand out.

LCF: What are you influenced by?
KT: Craft and sustainability are probably my main influences, but if I had to sum up my style, I’d say I like classic style in a contemporary way, and I enjoy using modern techniques to enhance the classic.

LCF: What things are important to you when designing?
KT: I like juxtaposition, having different materials set against each other, but also more fluid shapes with really geometric forms as well. I like to have a bit of variety in my designs.

LCF: What work experience have you undertaken?
KT: I’ve done internships throughout my final year, including placements at Vivienne Westwood and Holly Fulton. In my first year, I worked for a year with fashion jewellery designer Merle O’Grady, and I was able to go to the fashion week exhibition with her. Whilst with her, I did lots of production work, learnt how to manage small batch production, and also how to pursue your vision and market your work.

LCF: What are your future plans?
KT: I want to take a year to develop my current designs. Also, I definitely want to get some more industry experience and then possibly go on to do an MA.

LCF: What advice do you have for new LCF students?
KT: Make the most of all the sites and all the technicians at LCF because they can push your work in a new direction. You may not take a risk because you are scared to use a new process or unfamiliar machinery, but it’s those risks which pay off.
